Halloween! I love this time of year… Fall: crunchy leaves, pumpkin spice, sweaters, toques, warm crackling fires! *contented sigh* I’m about as basic as they come but I also like to get a little dark and mysterious, too. And do you know what Halloween is good for aside from gorging on candy?
Anyone who came of age around the release of ‘The Craft’ will remember the prickly sensation of mingled excitement and dread at anything remotely pagan. And Halloween is, basically, a pagan festival celebrating the end of the growing year and the connection to death that comes with the return of winter. It is the coming winter, leading to the death of plants and animals, which lead ancient people to think of Halloween as a time when spirits walk the earth.
Historical foot notes aside it does lend itself nicely to otherworldly things. So, in the spirit of all things spooky and witchy, here are a few things you can try to enhance your fertility during this season.
1. Make a fertility tonic
If you’re gonna get witchy this Halloween then why not start with a potion?! There are a TON of old wives tales about what to do or eat or wear when you are struggling to get pregnant. And many of them are basically brewing herbal teas! If you are into natural healing there are definitely naturopaths and herbalists that can help you get your fertility centered herb on… look them up in your local area! But for tonight why not try a brew of apples and onion cooked low and slow for 4 hours? Apparently it helps the uterine lining and clears tubal blockages. Sure, there is always the old standby of red raspberry leaf tea… but that’s way less fun sounding. 😉
2. Create a space where you can honour your desires for a child.
Halloween is great for focusing your internal desires externally. That which we call a spell by any other name can smell as potent! (Romeo and Juliet reference, anyone?) Do you have a place in your home where you like to pray? Or meditate? Or practice yoga? If you don’t, would you like one? It really can be helpful for you do have a focus point of sorts in your home so that when the going gets tough you can come to that space to re-center. Some like vision boards. Some like prayer alters. Some like meditation cards. Do what works for you. Put that good juju out there and see how it comes back to you!
3. Communicate with your future babies.
Halloween is said to be a time when communication between the world of the living and the dead is easiest. I like to think that it also extends to the world of the not yet living. While others use this time to communicate with their dead uncle Ned you could use it to communicate with the souls of babies that are around you. Close your eyes and meditate. Clear your mind. See if you get any feelings about the kind of children that are around you. Is there anything they want you to know? Let them know how tenderly they are loved and desperately they are wanted. If there is anything to this thinning of the veil between worlds then it seems like a good thing to do! You can even call it a ‘séance’ to really get in the Halloween mood!
4. Eat fertility foods in an all souls feast.
Halloween is well known as a feast day (ahem: candy hangover). This feasting tradition goes back to a time when people would be killing animals to save meat for the winter and harvesting the last of the crops. Bounty all around! So why not take this feasting tradition and spin it in a fertility way? Eating a well-balanced diet and one that is rich in some fertility foods (fatty fish, lean protein, high fiber, and whole foods) is a great thing to do to get your body in peak physical condition. Being at your healthiest will only enhance your baby making abilities, no matter the treatment you are doing. Why not add a great bottle of vino and some costumes to your feast and see if the tales about ‘those who throw caution to the wind’ are true? Cant’ hurt! Enjoy some food and reckless baby dancing. At any rate letting loose will be good for the soul.
5. Set intentions for the coming year.
Halloween used to mark the end of the year. It’s a ye olden days New Year’s Eve! Why not use this time to set some new fertility goals for the coming year? Clear the cobwebs from your mind and retune yourself to the family you are working so hard to create. Think through some positive affirmations that could help keep you on track with your own personal path to parenthood in the coming months. This journey is hard and long and our ideals and goals tend to become pretty fluid during the course of treatment. It can be good practice to reaffirm why you are doing this and look for some positivity to get you through.
Now, a brief reminder that these are mostly a collection of folk remedies and traditions and should not supplant the advice of your doctor or your upcoming IVF protocol. No one wants you to throw your Gonal-F pens away! But a little hocus-pocus probably couldn’t hurt your chances…right?
