Formerly the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada (IAAC)
Fertility Matters Canada (FMC) is the national organization that empowers Canadians to help reach their reproductive health goals by providing support, awareness, information and education; and promoting equal access to fertility treatments. We are Canada’s fertility resource.
FMC grew out of a volunteer group in Ottawa called the Infertility Self Support Group (ISSG), which began in 1983. Today, FMC is a national charitable organization, providing educational material, support and assistance to individuals and couples who are experiencing the anguish of infertility, the reproductive health disease that affects over half a million Canadian men and women.
FMC exists today to meet needs that may go unaddressed in the course of medical treatment, to reach out to those who may not be aware of the treatment options available, and to raise public awareness of infertility and the difficulty for some to access treatment. At FMC, we reach out to provide help on many levels. Front line assistance is a key part of FMC’s mission. We aim to connect with the 1 in 6 Canadians who are struggling to build their families. Through our very active social media streams, our newly redesigned website, our toll-free help and information line and our national network of support groups. In 2007, another important outreach initiative, Canadian Infertility Awareness Week (CIAW), was instated to raise awareness and hope in the community.
